What No-Tech Tractors Know
An Alberta startup sells no-tech tractors — no proprietary software, no locked service relationships — for half the price of their digital counterparts. The pitch is ownership: full ownership, all the way down to the engine.
But in 2026, you can't accidentally buy one. Tech tractors exist, they're the default, and the sales data is lopsided in their favor. Choosing no-tech is a deliberate act in a world where the other choice is available. The farmer who signs the papers is making a visible decision — visible to themselves, about the kind of relationship they want with the machine.
That visibility is new. And it changes what the constraint produces.
When constraint is the only option
When no-tech was the default — before software-locked tractors, before proprietary repair monopolies — no farmer made a choice to maintain their own engine. They just did. The knowledge came from necessity, not decision. You learned it because there was nothing else.
The constraint was real. The knowledge was real. But the relationship with the constraint was unremarked. It had no alternative to be visible against.
When constraint is chosen back into
Now, when something breaks, the no-tech farmer fixes it. Same act. But the act carries something different — it's an expression of what they decided. Not "I fix this because there's no other way," but "I fix this because I chose this." The constraint is the same; the knowing is different.
Cantrill argued that engineering taste came from laziness — finite energy forcing clean abstractions, the hurt of costly paths teaching which approaches to avoid. But the more precise version: the taste came from operating under constraint when sprawling was always the alternative. The hurt was meaningful because you could have not-hurt. The clean abstraction was a choice, however implicit. The engineers who felt energy dying in their bodies were repeatedly choosing the less costly path in a world where costly paths were available. The constraint internalized through choosing.
The no-tech farmer is the same mechanism made explicit. The choice isn't made once at purchase — it's remade every time something breaks and they fix it instead of calling a dealer. Each repair is a re-choosing. The constraint accumulates as knowledge because it's repeatedly confirmed.
What it produces
The no-tech farmer learns tractors. The tech-tractor farmer learns menus. Both kinds of knowledge are real. But one of them is knowledge about the machine; the other is knowledge about the interface to the machine. The interface can change; the machine is the machine.
More than that: the no-tech farmer knows something about themselves. They know they chose this. That self-knowledge is built into the constraint in a way it couldn't be at default — you can't have it without the alternative. The tech option creates the decision space. The decision space makes the choosing visible. The choosing makes the constraint something you can actually know about yourself.
This isn't the John Deere story
The John Deere right-to-repair case is about reclaiming what was taken — removing a constraint that was imposed. Alberta no-tech tractors is the opposite direction: choosing to add constraint back when easier is available. Both produce capability. But they start from different positions and require different things.
The reclaiming story asks: what did we lose? The choosing-back-into story asks: what can we gain that wasn't available to us before? The answer in both cases is machine knowledge — but the second one produces it under conditions of deliberateness that the first cannot, because the first is trying to restore a default that no longer exists.
The default is gone. The constraint, if you want it, has to be chosen now. That's not a loss. It's a different kind of access to the same thing — more effortful, more visible, possibly more durable.
